The photograph shown is typical of the band of lake country that spans the north country, with most lakes in the Northern Territories of the shield and the barrens of the north. The area is isolated by geography and has potential not yet tapped by the native peoples of the land or the Canadian Government in its entirety of managing the north for all Canadians.
When I first viewed the photograph that I cut out of a Goggle Earth space shot of our country and planet, I was surprise by the geographic lines cut into the earth’s crust by land plate formations shifting, and thought that this may be the answer to transportation routes to connect the region with a network of waterways, which could be used to move product and people around the north.
The faint yellow circle shows the perimeter of the circle and in it you will see some of these lines of water are already hinting towards a potential use, if my eyes are not fooling me? Check it out on Google Earth and see for yourself!
Sure, there are fish in many of these lakes shown, but the ones that don’t hold fish, could, if the proper aeration and management practices are put in place to monopolize on this unique geographic location. This is where the native peoples of the land come into the picture. It is they who will achieve this goal!
The paper that I wrote, a-number-of years ago, showing the potential and discussing a few thoughts on how to go about it, are a little crude, but a good start for someone to take it to the next level in bringing it to reality!
Someone with youth, energy, resources, and most of all a commitment to do some good for the people of the north and to create a whole new major boost to our economy and a clean investment for the future!
We have untapped areas of this country that are just waiting to be utilize to allow expansion of population on this earth, kind like spreading out the butter on all the areas of a piece of toast! What an adventure to a new land, but we have-to be wise about how we go about it, and make sure that the indigenous peoples of the land have full control of the management and the wealth that will follow, for all Canadians!
It does sound a little far-fetched, which is a polite way of putting it, but the idea has merit and it is so obvious to me and other fisheries scientists that have already tried to promote such a notion. Go to Google earth and do a little exploring of this lake rich area of the north country, which spreads down into the north east portion of our province of Alberta, but has a big chunk of Saskatchewan’s north country, which is much closer to home for an initial endeavor, to occur!
Please take the time to check out my paper and then go explore for yourself, and let your imagination pave an idea for a future more-bright than today’s!
